Hi, I’m Joey Mason, a Visual Journalist and Fine Artist based in Los Angeles, CA
After two decades as an Animation Designer and Art Director, I am now focusing on my personal practice documenting city life in LA and beyond.
I approach this work with the spirit of a street photographer, but through midcentury-inspired, on location ink drawings. Through this work I hope to capture overlooked moments, inspire curiosity and cultivate and appreciation for everyday life.
I am seeking residency to support a dedicated period to focus on this work and also expand my study to gain new perspectives and growth outside my home city

aras eanna art center residency
2024 • Inis Oirr, Aran Islands, Ireland
• Invited to represent Galway Cartoon Festival
• 1-month residency at Aras Eanna, a cultural center on the island
• Completed over 50 drawings of the island and stonework festival
• participated in Culture Night and presented a solo exhibition of my work there during the Cartoon Festival.
watershed studio Art residency
2022 • Galway, Ireland
•Accepted into 2-month residency at studio outside Galway in western Ireland.
• Completed over 100 drawings and held two open studios in collaboration with other artists.
• Produced the series ‘Quay Street Sketches’ studying the Main Street in Galway and self-published book collection
belgrade art studio residency
2021 • Belgrade, Serbia
• Accepted to 30-day, private studio residency in the heart of Belgrade
• Produced over 100 drawings
• Arranged and held an exhibition of my work at nearby cafe and music venue Polet.
